Qualus develops technology that makes leather production cleaner and cheaper. Its patented Sferes system adds polymer granules to tannery drums to improve chemical delivery to hides, which the company says reduces water use by 30 to 40 per cent, chemical use by 10 to 20 per cent and processing time by around a fifth. The business began in 2013 at the Institute for Creative Leather Technologies at the University of Northampton, separated from Xeros through a management buyout in 2019 and has received Innovate UK support. Tanneries in India, Mexico, Brazil and Europe use its system.
