What happened
Rebel Energy Supply Limited was incorporated in May 2017 and launched as a challenger domestic and small-business energy supplier positioned around renewable tariffs and social purpose. It was one of the few new entrants to survive the 2021–22 wave of supplier failures, and by early 2025 supplied around 80,000 household and 10,000 non-domestic customers. On 1 April 2025 Ofgem announced that Rebel Energy had ceased trading, citing a combination of rising wholesale costs, and appointed British Gas Trading as supplier of last resort for both gas and electricity, protecting customer credit balances. On 8 April 2025 Matthew Cowlishaw and Paul Meadows were appointed joint administrators of Rebel Energy Supply Limited, Rebel Energy Group Limited and Rebel Energy Labs Limited. The administration was extended in March 2026 and remained open at the May 2026 progress report.
