What happened

Campus London was Google's seven-storey start-up hub on Bonhill Street near Old Street, opened in 2012 on a ten-year lease and the first of the company's global Campus spaces. It offered free co-working, events, mentoring and Google for Startups programmes to early-stage founders, and Google said the network had helped create more than 11,000 tech jobs. The building closed in March 2020 under lockdown restrictions and services moved online. On 21 June 2021 Google confirmed the site would not reopen, arguing that London founders now had access to more than 250 co-working spaces and 35 accelerators and that a staff-led model without a building, already used in Germany and the US, was more useful. The programme was run inside Google UK Limited, which remains active.

Why

  • Macro / market conditions
  • Demand fell away

What happened to the assets, customers and team

The physical Campus closed permanently; Google for Startups UK continued mentoring and programmes remotely and at partner venues. Other Campuses (Madrid, Tokyo, São Paulo, Tel Aviv) were not closed at the time.

In their words

The UK startup community doesn't need access to a single-shared physical space as much as it needs access to resources

Lessons

Corporate start-up hubs are discretionary spend tied to a lease and a thesis; once remote delivery proved workable the building became hard to justify.
