What happened

Lunaz, founded by David Lorenz in Silverstone in 2018, converted classic cars such as Rolls-Royces and Aston Martins to electric power under its Lunaz Design brand and, through Lunaz Applied Technologies, re-engineered diesel refuse lorries as electric vehicles. David Beckham took a stake in 2021 and the company was valued at up to $200m after a 2022 funding round. In March 2024 the commercial-vehicle subsidiary entered administration after struggling to fund its HGV electrification programme, the group halted all operations, and on 20 March 2024 Miles Needham and Sarah Cook of FRP Advisory were appointed administrators of Lunaz Group Ltd. The administrators said the government's extension of the petrol and diesel sales ban from 2030 to 2035 had slowed sales. Most jobs were lost. Lunaz Group Ltd moved into creditors' voluntary liquidation in February 2025.

Why

  • Regulatory or counterparty shock
  • Could not raise the next round

What happened to the assets, customers and team

The majority of staff were made redundant on administration, with around 40 jobs already lost at Lunaz Applied Technologies (renamed App Tech Productions, itself placed into liquidation in October 2025). In June 2024 the founder announced operations had restarted under the Lunaz Design and Up-cycled Electric Vehicles brands; Lunaz Group Ltd entered creditors' voluntary liquidation on 21 February 2025.

In their words

the recent extension to the deadline for the transition to zero-emissions vehicles led to a slowdown in sales

Lessons

A business case built on a regulatory deadline is only as firm as the deadline, and when the ZEV date moved, fleet demand for conversions moved with it. Funding a capital-hungry heavy-vehicle programme alongside a bespoke classic-car workshop left the group without the cash to see either through.
